They're Applying across America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of a few weeks, the US president began displaying the public his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then commenced solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and this week a study forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans might have little sense of him since they are atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.

The Savior's reaction to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover also.

The obvious and straightforward fact that the Savior from scripture requests a kind of profound affection focused on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Best Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to witness the determined opposition against Trump emerge in this past year. It has been significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the highest qualities within national heritage.

The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In both situations does it mean pretending the most damaging of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and belief, a combination that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
